Castiel was beyond loyal to his father, God. He did everything in his name, sticking to the book perfectly and never stepping out of line. He was both admired and respected throughout his angel brothers and sisters, though often times seen as naive; which was true. Castiel did as he was told by his superiors, never once questioning that perhaps his orders weren't coming from God. Listening without fail is what caused Castiel to question all he knew.
Told to lift Dean Winchester from hell, Castiel did so without a second thought; grabbing him and pulling him from the fiery pit below. He noticed right away he felt different towards this mortal than he had for others he had come across, but he shook the feeling and continued with his life.. Until Dean needed him. The two went back and forth often, Castiel always defending his father and telling Dean what God would want and how to get it done.
He had a distaste for Deans younger brother, Sam, but kept it mostly to himself. Eventually, Castiel realized Dean was right and something strange was going on. At that point, he believed less in God and more in Dean. He was punished, severely, severing his ties with Dean for only a short time before he again was risking his life for the mortal.

Dean Winchester: Castiel feels protective towards Dean, and at first struggles with these emotions. He isn't supposed to feel, but for some reason he can't help it with the gruff dog.
Sam Winchester: Castiel will always defend Sam, for Dean, but does not harbor strong caring feelings towards him. At times the two don't get along at all, only held together by their love for Dean.
Chester: Chester is Castiel's younger brother, and an angel who took a liking to Sam. Cas tried to force Chester to stay in Heaven, but ultimately failed and was followed. Castiel adores Chester in the same way Dean adores Sam and finds it hard not to defend him.

Personality
Castiel is... different, to say the least. Often confused and easily manipulated at first, he grows in many ways throughout his time of knowing Sam and Dean Winchester. In the beginning he's very serious, and at times incredibly naive; which is strange of an angel if you think about it. As he starts to open his eyes more to the goings-on, he realizes something is just not right and turns into something more of a independent angel. He starts to, slowly at first, think for himself and come to his own ideas and conclusions, though he's still often clueless about jokes and silly phrases said by either of the Winchesters. He also ventures more into the world of mortals for a short time, believing he will soon be close to death.
